Megan Meier Foundation honors those fighting bullying

ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) – A nine year old who sold tee shirts to help fight bullying was among those honored Saturday night by the Megan Meier Foundation during its annual Celebration Gala held Saturday at the Heart of St. Charles Banquet Center.

Jordan Reynolds is a third grader who learned about anti-bullying efforts from his mixed martial arts teacher Jermaine Andre. Jordan set up a web site and by selling tee shirts raised $403, which he donated to the Megan Meier Foundation. Andre was also honored during the gala for his ongoing efforts to teach kids that bullying is wrong and to help them build up their self-confidence through fitness and mixed martial arts training.

The Megan Meier Foundation honors the memory of Megan Meier, a St. Charles County student who was cyberbullied to the point of committing suicide. Her mother, Tina Meier operates it. Meier says the movement is growing.

Missouri budget includes $750K for school safety

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Missouri schools could get state money for training on how to respond to shooting incidents.

A provision added to Missouri’s proposed budget by Sen. Kurt Schaefer would provide $750,000 for what he describes as “school safety and active shooter response training.”

The grants would be administered by the Missouri School Boards’ Association.

Schaefer is a Republican from Columbia who is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The panel agreed Monday to add the money to the budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

The state’s roughly $26 billion budget still must be considered by the full Senate. The House passed a different version last month. A final budget plan must be negotiated and sent to Gov. Jay Nixon by May 9.

Ameren Missouri customers bills may go up

(KTVI) – Your Ameren Missouri bills could get a little more expensive, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The report says the fuel adjustment charge on your bill may be about 66-cents more this coming June.

The cold winter boosted electric demand and fuel costs beyond seasonal norms, and that has Ameren Missouri saying it needs $57 million dollars more from customers to make up the difference.

The change still must be approved by Missouri Public Service Commission.

What is an Index Fund?

(KTVI) – There’s a lot of buzz around index funds being a low fee way to invest, yet according to a recent survey, not all investors understand what an index fund is, or how if differs from a traditional, managed mutual fund. Matt Allgeyer, Financial Planner with Wamhoff Financial Planning and Accounting Services, explains them to Elliot Weiler.

1. What is an Index Fund?
• An index fund is typically a mutual fund, or group of investments, that try to replicate a specific index in the financial market, such as the DOW, S&P or Nasdaq.
• An index fund is not a managed account. It will experience the ups and downs of the regular market.
• Index funds are meant as a tool to mimic the actual market of that financial indicator.
